Greencastle Hill Hike in Antigua
The Environmental Awareness Groups hosts wonderful hiking experiences in Antigua and this trek was a good example. The hike was up Greencastle Hill. a 565ft hill, which was once an isolated volcano. Not only does this hike present breath-taking views of the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the west and the vastness of Antiguan land to the north, but a fascinating and mysterious feature exists atop this mountain.
Greencastle Hill is famous for stone features known as megaliths on the west side of the hill. These jutting, massive rocks boast ancient carvings which suggest some were used in ancient rituals. Historians suspect religious ceremonies and phallic worship took place possibly by the Arawaka people. These megaliths have been dubbed the tropical stonehenge and are a must-see for history and eco buffs.
